“I remained in a recess of the rock, gazing on this wonderful and stupendous scene. The sea, or rather the vast river of ice, wound among its dependent mountains, whose aerial summits hung over its recesses. . . I suddenly beheld the figure of a man, at some distance, advancing towards me with superhuman speed. He bounded over the crevices in the ice, among which I had walked with caution; his stature, also, as he approached, seemed to exceed that of man.”

The creature.  The creation of life.  Of course not the perfect creation, that’s way too boring.  But a creature that understands his non humanness.  Similar to Gregor in Metamorphosis – these creatures are always lurking.  I wanted to capture the humanoid quality of the monster as he scaled the cliffs and spires.  Kind of looking like a man, but things just a little off.  And also bringing in the pursuit of the creature by Victor Frankenstein – and it staying just out of reach.  I remember reading this book earlier and being struck more by the atrocities of the unnamed creation than by the anguish that reared its head more forcefully this time.         August 2014
